No practice, no mistakes, no progress.
There’s one big problem with Chinese students. Whenever a student gives a wrong answer, the others would laugh at him, which makes him feel shy, embarrassed and uneasy. Often it seems that those who laugh are always better , as if laughing proves that they are glorious and superior. Such situations need to be properly addressed by the teacher. The teacher should help a student correct the mistakes and encourage him or her. The teacher could say,” You did a good job!”, “You’ve learnt something from your mistakes!” This kind of student will certainly accept the teacher’s encouragement, trust and hope in him or her, and as a result he or she will work even harder. The student may think, “Thanks to the working on the mistakes, my English becomes better than it was a moment ago.” And “I’ve learnt a little more from the mistakes.”As time goes on, the student is progressing, learning more and more and surely, there will be one day when our student’s English level outruns those who used to mock and bull him.
Unfortunately, those students who once laughed at him will always stand on their original places, and very likely that they will never make any progress because of their fear of making mistakes. More, the fear of admitting their mistakes would keep their mouths shut and therefore, those students will never be able to move on. They choose to be afraid and keep their heads down rather than breaking through their own fears. Thus, the golden opportunity to practice English can be lost. In other words, they lifted a stone and it fell on their own feet.
We believe that mistakes are natural, normal and wonderful. Mistakes are our good friends, and they sometimes help us a lot. If you think them as your enemies, they will never do any good for you. We should say gratefully,” Mistakes are wonderful.Let’s thank them!”
My fellow students let me tell you something. Now, my English is better than yours only because I’ve made more mistakes than you have. I like mistakes very much. They help me to understand which is right and which is wrong. Your teacher is only an ordinary person, who has made more mistakes than you have, who has learnt more from the mistakes than you have, who has gained knowledge earlier than you have. English is only a language. However, English is very practical. The final aim of learning English is to use it: to understand the speech, to be able to communicate, to be able to write and read in English. And so I repeat, “Love mistakes and correct mistakes.” Only then you would improve yourself, and make progress. And please remember:
“No practice, no mistakes, no progress!” good, good study, day day up!
