The oral English of English teachers needs to improve urgently
As we all know, English is becoming more and more important nowadays and there are actually some primary schools, which give English lessons from grade one. In some cases English teaching takes place in some infant schools and hence the children begin to learn English at a very young age.
But the problems are: Do we have enough English teachers? Are the present English teachers really suitable for their work? Can they speak and teach good English? … As far as I know, there are many English teachers who are not very good at speaking at all. For example they have poor pronunciation and tend to express ideas from Chinese thinking, which inevitably leads to poor English sentence constructions, such as wrong word orders. This method of literally translating from Chinese to English also gives rise to the use of words in wrong situations. The English teachers also have bad ways of teaching grammar and just concentrate too much on giving tests and the results obtained by students. Consequently daily conversational use of the language, which is perhaps the most important part, is neglected and therefore most of the students can only read and write well and lack speaking and listening skills.
I strongly feel that this whole situation needs to be addressed, especially by those in power. As for the role of English teachers, firstly we should be more aware of the whole situation and more prepared to accept this. Only when this acceptance has taken place can teachers put forward suggestions for improvements. Secondly in order to change this situation, English teachers should do something from now on, such as only using English in the office and classroom. In the classroom for example, teachers should give frequent commands in English rather than Chinese. A third recommendation is that schools should give regular tests on oral English. This can help teachers to speak and practise continuously. It is important to remember that persistence can lead to success. Finally, I’d like to mention that all the English teachers who give homework regularly or even everyday to the students and ask them to listen, read and write should consider what additional English studies they themselves are doing in order to improve their own English, and whether they study and have to hand in assignments everyday. I would like to commend the teachers who are already doing this and they should continue their progress. Those who are not should consider learning from their counterparts and start now.
In conclusion, we are all on the way to success even though still scratching the surface; we should be quick and active or face the likely consequences of an ever worsening situation. Good luck and just remember: ‘persistence leads to success.’ |
