THE first Olympic Cultural Festival began on Sunday in Beijing, the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games. 2 Nature disasters kill almost 2,000

NATURAL disasters have killed 1,911 people this year in China, according to Yang Yanyin, vice civil affairs minister, on Sunday. Yang said Sunday that disasters, including floods, droughts, earthquakes, hail storms, wind storms, landslides and mudflows, have also done over 150 billion yuan in damage, including the destruction of over 50 million hectares of crops. Over 6 million people were evacuated this year due to natural disasters, Yang added.
