As an English teacher, I’m very glad to have got your letters to discuss English learning. In learning a language, whether it is English or any other language, you have to meet with many difficulties. Now most of you have some trouble with vocab and grammar. Even if you had solved these problems, new problems would crop up on the way ahead. So don’t worry about them so much that you are stressed and discouraged. You can achieve success in English if you try your best to overcome one difficulty after anther. In some of your students’ letters, very good suggestions are made about language learning. What they say is quite right. Let’s read the following:

“When you want to memorize an article, for example, you can translate it into Chinese first, and then translate it back into English. The next morning, review again. Thus, you can learn it by heart,” says Mi Qian。

Yang Xiaotian thinks that it is the best way to learn grammar and new words through reading. Another way is?to chat in English with your friends. This is the best way for us to improve our English.

Sun Tianjiao says, “When you want to memorize an article, for example, you can translate it into Chinese first, and then translate it back into English. The next morning, review again. Thus, you can learn it by heart.”

My pieces of advice on English vocab are as follows.

1. Keep a vocabulary notebook. When you learn a new word, add it to your notebook. Write down a sentence that will help you remember how to use the word.

2. Group words by topic to remember them. It’s easier to study new words when you organize them into groups like foods or action verbs.

3. Use new words as many times as possible in your daily life. The best way to learn and remember new words is to use them when you speak or write. Try using at least several new English words every day.

4. Ask yourself questions in English what you have learned in English class and answer them or try to write your lessons down from memory. Sometimes it is difficult for you to do at the beginning. You can have a try.

As for English grammar, there are also four tips for your reference.

1. Study grammar formulas and examples. Many grammar structures have formulas or rules that you can memorize. For example, the formula for the present perfect tense is subject + has/have + past participle. It can also be helpful to remember an example of a specific grammar structure. An example of the present perfect tense is I’ve visited Paris many times.

2. Use the new grammar you’ve learned. When you speak or write in English, try to include some of the new grammar structures you have studied.

3. Get a grammar reference book and become familiar with grammar terms. Go to a bookshop to choose the one you like best. Before purchasing a grammar reference book, read through a few pages to make sure you understand the explanations.

4. Don’t worry about speaking and writing correctly all the time. Practise, practise and practise. It’s important to learn and understand the rules of English grammar. But sometimes it’s good to relax and just focus on communicating your ideas. Remember that making errors is a natural part of the language learning process. The best way to improve your use of English grammar is to use English whenever and wherever you can!

Of course, there are many other things you ‘d better pay attention to. For instance, if you get into a habit of reading English aloud every day, you might find you get familiar with many English words. One more thing to remember, keep in touch with people around you. Think how others learn English successfully. If you have any problems you can’t solve, ask for help from your parents, teachers, classmates. They may be helpful.
