The keys
Mr. Smith lives in a very tall building. He lives on the 14th floor. Every day he takes a lift up and down.
    One Sunday afternoon, he goes shopping with his son by car. They buy a lot of things, and then come back. Suddenly they see a notice on the wall. It says:“Dear sirs, there is something wrong with the lift. Please use the stairs now.”
    The son is very happy. He goes upstairs quickly, and Mr. Smith follows him. At last, they stand in front of their door. They are very tired. Mr. Smith begins to look for his keys, but he can’t find them.
    Suddenly, he shouts, “Oh, no, I put my keys in the car.”

美国人真是什么都敢姓
美国人的“姓”五花八门，美国姓氏之杂，居全球之冠。五大洲各色移民且不论，仅来自英伦三岛的盎格鲁——撒克逊血统移民姓氏之怪，就让人大开眼界。例如，有人姓苹果（Apple）、桔子（Orange），有人姓大米（Rice）、小麦（Wheat）、玉蜀黍（Corn）等，还有人姓熏猪肉（Bacon）、火腿（Ham）、咳嗽（Cough）、狼（Wolf）、狐狸（Fox）、灰烬（Ash）、毒药（Poison）、公鸡（Cock）、公鸭（Duck）、鱼（Fish）。也有人姓鸟（Bird），虽然中国人中不乏姓牛姓马的，但称呼“鸟先生”、“鸟太太”，在中国人听来，总有几分滑稽。
有人姓胳膊粗壮（Armstrong），有人姓懦夫（Coward），有人姓疯狂（Crazy）、姓棺材（Coffin）、姓扫帚（Broom），甚至姓扫帚把（Broomstick）。还有人姓死（Death）、姓地狱（Hell），这可就有些晦气了。坟墓、死人都是大不吉利之词，在美国亦敢姓之，其余可想而知。
有些人明明是白人，却偏偏姓黑（Black），而黑得发亮的人却姓白（White），不少碧眼金发的“白雪公主”，别人却叫她黑男人（Blackman）、蛋头（Egghead）小姐、秃头（Bald）小姐，阴着阳错。有的教授学富五车、满腹经纶，尊姓竟是农夫（Farmer），而一字不识的农夫，却堂而皇之姓起聪明人（Wiseman）来。
